Comprehensive Dentistry Exams

In order to maintain the best oral health possible, regular, comprehensive dental exams are a necessity. The American Dental Association recommends that you visit your dentist at least twice a year. Regular exams are vital to assess possible problems such as gum disease, oral cancer, cavity development, and replacing worn out dental work such as metal fillings and discolored crowns. Catching problems early will prevent bigger problems from developing, which will end up saving you time and money.

What Does a Comprehensive Oral Exam Involve?

  • We provide a thorough oral cancer screening.

  • A series of diagnostic x-rays will be taken so we can analyze the condition of your teeth and bone structure.

  • We conduct a complete periodontal screening to check for symptoms and evidence of gum disease.

  • We check for any possible bite problems or jaw issues.

  • A tooth-specific exam is also provided to all of your teeth to check for cavities, examine the condition of other dental work, and identify cracked or missing teeth. To aid in our caries diagnosis we use a device called a Diagnodent. Diagnodent is a technological apparatus that uses lasers to pick up any signs of tooth decay. The main attraction of such a device is that it is able to identify signs of tooth decay earlier than many other investigative techniques. This is a positive step in the treatment of teeth, as the sooner signs of tooth decay are found the better prepared dental professionals are to deal with them.

Maintaining your oral health is top priority for us at Ricafort Dental. Managing small problems and eliminating them is crucial in avoiding serious health issues such as tooth loss, gum disease and oral cancer. So call us today to schedule an exam, and let us maintain your smile to last a lifetime!

Oral Cancer Screening

Oral cancer has become the sixth deadliest cancer in the world. In fact, oral cancer claims the life of one American every hour. That’s why, at Ricafort Dental, we take this issue very seriously and strive to provide the best detection and prevention methods possible.

Oral Cancer Risk Factors

  • Age – 90% of people diagnosed are over the age of 40
  • Prevalent alcohol and tobacco use
  • Family history of cancer

Oral cancer isn’t limited to just older people or alcohol and tobacco users, more and more people under the age of 40 are being diagnosed as well, and 25% of all people diagnosed do not drink alcohol or use tobacco products. Unfortunately, most cases go untreated and the cancer isn’t discovered until late stages of development – the reason why oral cancer has such a high mortality rate. Early detection is crucial; 90% of oral cancers are curable if discovered early.

ViziLite Screening

To ensure the most efficient detection methods are being utilized, Ricafort Dental now uses Vizilite, a system that utilizes light screening technology to discover soft tissue abnormalities and lesions, in combination with a normal visual examination. The Vizilite procedure is painless and non-evasive:

  • You rinse with a cleansing solution, then your mouth is scanned with the Viziite light

  • Normal tissue will absorb the light and appear dark and abnormal tissue will turn white

  • Based on the results, we will determine the nature of the abnormality

  • It is recommended that all adults should be screened annually

Oral Cancer is a serious health risk and should not be taken lightly. Early detection is key to prevention, so please don’t hesitate to schedule an exam, including full oral cancer screening, at your Murfreesboro dentist.

White AMALGAM Fillings

Composite amalgam fillings are an excellent alternative to silver amalgam fillings. Composite fillings are tooth colored and our team at Ricafort Dental can shade them accordingly to create a perfect match, giving you a beautiful, white smile!

Benefits of Composite White Fillings

  • Cosmetic Aesthetics: These fillings are created to match your tooth to ensure a natural look and feel

  • Because composite fillings can be created in smaller preparations, less tooth structure is lost and less drilling is needed

  • The material is made from acrylic and glass particles, containing no mercury or other metals

  • Provides support to remaining tooth structure, and insulates against temperature changes

The White Filling Process

  • The tooth is prepared to remove decay

  • Next, a bonding agent is applied to the prepared tooth

  • The composite material is placed and molded to your tooth structure

  • The material is hardened by focusing intense ultraviolet light on it for about a few seconds

  • The filling is now complete and you have a bright, natural-looking new tooth!

Your filling brightness can be maintained by simply practicing good oral hygiene and avoiding staining food and drinks such as coffee, soda, tea, etc. For more information on composite white fillings or to schedule an appointment, call your Murfreesboro dentist and let us rejuvenate your smile!

Root Canal Therapy

According to the American Association of Endodontists, root canal therapy is the most feared dental procedure of all. That’s not surprising; in our society, root canals have been characterized as being excruciating and unbearable. Despite this stigma, root canal therapy is actually a pain-free, quick and relatively comfortable procedure. In fact, it relieves your pain and can prevent more complicated oral issues down the road. Here at your Murfreesboro dentist, we can put your fears at ease.

What is a Root Canal?

A “root canal” is a term used to describe the natural cavity in the center of a tooth. This area contains a soft area known as the pulp chamber that houses the nerve. If this area becomes irritated or infected due to cavities, trauma or decay, root canal therapy is necessary. If left untreated, the infection can cause an abscess, which can lead to swelling of the face and neck and bone loss around the roots of teeth.

Symptoms of a Root Canal Problem

  • Severe tooth pain and sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures

  • Tooth becomes discolored

  • Swollen, tender gums

  • A recurring “pimple” that forms on the gums

Root Canal Therapy Procedure

In years past, root canal treatments would take multiple long visits. Thanks to advances in technology and technique, the procedure can be completed in a single visit in less than an hour. In the treatment:

  • The area around the target tooth is numbed, isolated and sterilized from bacteria

  • The infected tissue is removed, and replaced by a rubber filling material

  • The tooth is then built back up and prepared for a crown

Don’t continue to live in pain or let your fears get the better of you. Call your Murfreesboro dentist today, and receive relief in a comfortable, pain-free environment. If finances are an issue, we can work within your budget as well. Learning what to expect after root canal surgery can be helpful and often removes some of the apprehension associated with this procedure.

Treating Gum Disease

Periodontal disease, commonly known as gum disease, is caused by bacteria in plaque. If not consistently removed, this bacteria builds up, infecting your teeth, gums, and eventually the bone that supports your teeth. This is a common cause of tooth loss. This disease has three stages of progression: gingivitis, periodontitis, and advanced periodontitis; the longer the disease has to advance, the more damage it causes. With advancements in detection and treatment, we can discover periodontal disease early and begin treatment before complicated issues arise.

Common signs of Gum Disease

  • Red, tender, and swollen gums that bleed during brushing or flossing

  • Constant bad breath or bad taste in your mouth

  • Gum line receding, or gums are pulling away from teeth and forming pockets

  • Changes in your bite or teeth alignment, loose teeth

Gum Disease Treatment Process

  • We provide a comprehensive cleaning to remove built up plaque and tartar.

  • For more advanced conditions, scaling and deep root planing are effective treatments we provide. These procedures also involve inclusive cleaning, but deeper into areas above and below the gum line.

A local anesthetic is administered in conjunction as well.

  • After treatment, an antimicrobial mouth rinse is prescribed to reduce oral bacterial count until we can see you for your one month check up

  • Ricafort Dental recommends that patients being treated for periodontal disease get their teeth professionally cleaned every three months for at least the first year of treatment.

How Can I Prevent Gum Disease Before it Starts?

Simple, everyday steps can also be taken to avoid gum disease growth, including:

  • Brushing and flossing consistently at least twice day

  • Using an antimicrobial mouth rinse daily to help control plaque

  • Scheduling regular checkups

If you are experiencing the symptoms of gum disease, it’s essential that you begin treatment. Besides tooth loss, studies have linked untreated periodontal disease to the development of severe health issues such as heart disease, strokes, diabetes and pre-term low birth-weight babies. If you think you may have gum disease, please contact your Murfreesboro dentist to schedule an appointment right away.

Crowns

Ideal for protecting a cracked tooth or covering up discoloration, crowns at Ricafort Dental can be a great solution for improving your smile. A crown is a tooth shaped cap that fits over a problem tooth to improve strength, size and appearance.

The crown procedure is simple:

  • First we will anesthetize the area. Once completely numb, the tooth is filed down so that the crown fits appropriately.

  • Some crowns can be made right in our office. Instead of making an impression for the laboratory, we make a digital impression which goes right to our computer. Through an in-house milling unit a

porcelain crown is made and seated on the same day!

  • Some crowns have to be made in a dental laboratory. If this is needed then, we will take an impression of the tooth to use in the construction of the crown. The impressions are sent away to a dental laboratory to create your crown. Meanwhile, we apply a sturdy temporary crown over the problem tooth while your permanent crown is manufactured. Once your permanent crown is ready, you will come back to Ricafort Dental and the crown will be permanently seated. Now you have a bright, healthy-looking new tooth!

Crown placement can offer several benefits:

  • Long term durability

  • Protection from further decay, infection and cracking

  • Improved chewing and talking

  • An improved, natural and healthier smile

Dental Bridges: Procedure & Advantages

A dental bridge is a long-lasting solution to replacing lost teeth. Dental bridges are made of three or more porcelain crowns fused together to replace missing teeth. Unlike traditional dentures, bridges are permanent and cannot be removed.

The Dental Bridge Procedure

  • First, you are given a local anesthetic to eliminate any pain. The teeth on either side of the missing space are then shaped to receive a crown.

  • An impression of your teeth is made so that your dental bridge can be accurately made by a dental laboratory and fit you perfectly.

  • You are fitted with a temporary bridge to protect your gums and teeth while the permanent one is being crafted.

  • In your next appointment, the temporary bridge is removed and your permanent bridge is seated. Once it’s correctly fitted, it is permanently bonded into place.

Advantages of Dental Bridges

  • Offer a natural, healthy appearance and are cosmetically appealing

  • Can be applied in only two office visits

  • Are more permanent and secure than traditional dentures

  • Help regain natural speaking and chewing ability

  • Prevent remaining teeth from drifting out of position

  • Colored to perfectly match the shade of your other teeth

If you’re feeling self-conscious about your missing teeth, worry no more. Ricafort Dental can help you regain your lost smile today! Call us at (615) 890-0474 to see if you’re a candidate for dental bridges.

Sedation Dentistry Options

Having a dental procedure performed may be very nerve-racking.In fact, approximately 40 million Americans avoid the dentist because of fear and anxiety, according to the Academy of General Dentistry.

Our team is here to help you overcome your dental anxiety and regain your confidence about visiting the dentist. In our personalized approach, we offer several ways to assist you in receiving treatment while remaining relaxed

Nitrous Oxide-N2O (laughing gas)

This allows you to relax during your treatment and resume your normal activities immediately after your appointment.

Nitrous oxide is best suited for cases of mild to moderate anxiety and is the most frequently used method. Nitrous oxide is administered through a demand-valve inhaler over your nose that releases gas when you inhale through your nose. You will feel the effects within minutes. After your procedure, these effects are quickly eliminated allowing you to safely drive home.

Oral Medication

Safe, reliable, and convenient, oral medications can deliver a more relaxed state of sedation than nitrous-oxide.

Oral medication is highly effective for mild to moderate anxiety. This type of medication is administered with a prescribed pill, one hour before your appointment, to facilitate a state of relaxation. After the procedure, patient may remain “woozy” for part of the day and will need a driver to take them to and from the dental office.

Intravenous Sedation

For those patients with more severe anxiety, sedation using intravenous medications can eliminate a patient’s dental fears. Patients do not experience any pain and have no memory of any procedure being done. Patient’s undergoing intravenous sedation will need the rest of the day to recover and will need a driver to take them to and from the dental office.

Patients who choose to undergo this form of sedation usually get all or most of their dental work done in one visit. This can be very convenient since a patient does not need to return multiple times for treatment.

Dr. Ricafort uses the services of a dental anesthesiologist to ensure that the patient is under the best of care before, during, and after treatment.

During your visit, we can discuss these options with you and create your personalized treatment plan for a relaxing and worry free dental care experience.

Whether you require a single filling or are looking for a complete smile makeover, anxiety-free dentistry can help you achieve optimum dental health in the most comfortable way possible.
